Textbooks, as both teachers’ teaching and students’ learning toolsand resources, are foundations to attain educational effects andteaching objectives. Encouraged by the curriculum reform, the policyto diversity versions in textbooks is being put into practice under theguidance of the progressive realization of the National CurriculumStandards. To make reasonable decisions in the selection of them, it’sessential for teachers to analyze and evaluate these textbooksappropriately and scientifically so as to choose the most appropriatelearning material for their students.This paper chooses two sets of textbooks,“Oxford English (YilinEdition)” and “Oxford English (Shanghai Edition)”, for this comparativestudy with the purpose to demonstrate the advantages anddisadvantages between the two. In this way, teachers can make fulluse of the advantages of the teaching material and do better in theirteaching of the junior middle school. The paper employs comparative,documentary and questionnaires to obtaining analytical data andcombines the static analysis with the dynamic analysis. The staticanalysis pays attention to topics of discourses, guiding theories,knowledge of language (focusing on grammar and vocabulary), andthe training of linguistic skills (focusing on listening, speaking, readingand writing). In order to gather the latest information about thefeedback of the textbooks, this research makes the dynamic analysisbased on the investigation about these two sets of textbooks inMinhang District, Shanghai and Yixing City, Jiangsu Province.This research paper concludes with suggestions for the editing andteaching of these textbooks, with the intention of further improvingEnglish language teaching.
