Freshman education is the starting point of the university education andthe important component of student affairs as well. Freshman education success isnot only related to individual study life, but also linked to undergraduate teachingquality and long-term development of higher education. The United States, as aleader in this field, has successfully set up a freshman education plan with abundantconnotation. However, now, our country’s freshman education also is in a keydevelopment. So through the comparative study between two countries, we canrecognize ourselves clearly and then strive to build a new freshman education roadwith decidedly Chinese characteristics.This research firstly analyzes the connotation of freshman education and somerelevant theories. Giving birth to define “university freshman education”, andexpounds the related theories on student development, which is closely related tofreshman education. Secondly, it elaborates the history of Sino-us freshmaneducation from various stages. The freshman education in America has a longhistory and experiences the formation period, development period and mature period.While in our country it started very late, since the new China was founded, from theexperience of initial stage, and development period. In the summary, it also pointsout the advantages and disadvantages of the American freshman education, and thetroubles of China’s freshman education.Thirdly, try to discuss the similarities and differences between Sino-usfreshman educations. The similarity embodies on “students foremost”, what they doare all for students better development. But, there are great differences on historyprocess, the management concept, education goal, education content, operatingmechanism, and the management team. Then we try to dig essential reasons from sixaspects on these differences, including economy environment, traditional culture,social values, education concept, students’ characteristics, university system andinstitutional guarantee. Finally according to the mentioned-above, the research pointsout China’s present problems of freshman education, and put forward somesuggestions based on the conditions in China, which are change ideas and payattention to freshman education; set up the goal and realize layer advance; develop old traditions and deepen education content; change the way and optimize educationmode; play characteristic and establish the professional team; establish security andadvocate the government support. In this last part, the study emphasis on contentsystem of freshman education in our country, dividing it into conventional education,adaptation education, quality development, education with Chinese characteristicsand assessment system.
