This research is an empirical study on Professional Identity of instructionaldesigners in E-Learning including instructional designers and related students. In terms ofthe data from questionnaires and interviews, the author trys to compare the overall levelwith sub-levels in the current situation of professional identity and analyse the levelsinfluenced by indivial characteristic variables for finding out the relevant factors.According to the deep interviews with the manager in company and instructional designers,the author comes to know something about the role, the skills, the training and promotingand other points in the working. This paper is devided into five parts.Chapter One, Introduction. The author describes the background and meaning of thestudy, then defines the concepts of indentity, professional identity, instructional designers’professional identity and so on.Chapter Two, Literature Reviews. The related research on instructional designers andprofessional identity are reviewed.Chapter Three, Research Ideas. In the chapter, the purpose, the problems to be solved,the methods, the subjects and the tools are presented.Chapter Four, Analysis of current situation in professional identity. Firstly, someindividual informations are collected such as gender, age, major, areas of working orstudying; Seondly, the overall levels of professional identity are reflected on the followingsix aspects: professional knowledge, professional emotion, professional ability,professional value, professional expection and professional will. In the study of on-the-jobinstructional designers, it shows that the instructional designers are able to identifythemselves with their career basicially on the overall level. In the sub-levels, they scorehighly in professional knowledge and professional expection, while score lowly in theprofessional value. Some factors are not related to the levels of professional identitysignificantly such as the title of project manager, the length of service, working ares, butthe support of training from cooperation is vital to the level of professional identity.In the study of students, the students are able to identify themselves with instructionaldesigner basicially on the overall level. They score highly in professional knowledge andlowly in professional ability. The levels are not influenced significantly by some factorssuch as the experience of instructional designing and gender, while the areas where their schools are located are related significantly to the levels of professional identity oninstructional designers. After detailed comparison, it turns out that the students in Beijingand other places except Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou score highly on the overalllevel. The author concludes the problems and influencing factors in three aspects: society,corperation and individual,Chapter Five, Suggestions and Thinking. In the view of the current situation, theauthor gives some suggestions and countermeasures from4aspects: society, cooperation,individual and colleges.
