With the further accelerating of the speed of economic globalization, the need of innovative talents is becoming more and more urgent in the society which also puts forward higher requirements of the workers’ innovative spirit. In this context, China began a new round of basic education curriculum reform, in which the research learning as to cultivate students’ innovative spirit and practical ability emerged and undoubtedly became one of the highlights of the new curriculum.Research learning refers to learning activities that students, under the guidance of teachers, select and identify research topics to study from nature, society and life aspects, and during the course of the study, acquire and apply knowledge and solve problems on their own initiative. It has been written into the national curriculum plan as an independent course and also become a compulsory subject for the high school students. In the fall of2007, Shannxi Province stepped into the stage of the new curriculum reform. Up to now, the research learning in Shanxi Province has been put forward for about five years, but how is the status of implementation of rural high school in Hanbin? To what extent do the teachers, students and parents know and understand it? What are the problems and shortcomings still left in the process of curriculum implementation? What other factors are still restricting the smooth implementation of this course? Faced with the current situation, how can we biology teachers be competent to guide the work of the research learning? Following these questions, I did this research by conducting literature analysis, questionnaire and interview survey. On the basis of researching lots of literature, I designed three questionnaires, including teacher questionnaires, student questionnaires and parent questionnaires, conducted a survey on the nine rural high schools in Hanbin district and analyzed the results by statistical analysis. Through the investigation, we can see78.72%of the schools have opened a research learning courses from the teacher questionnaire and74.44%from the student questionnaire, and by interview I was informed that in the survey of9high schools there are7schools opened research learning courses. In the creation of research learning in these schools, the20.27%schools to interest groups and the form of salon of science and technology,43.24%of the schools open it separately as a required course, while36.49%schools are permeable from other disciplines. Although implement of study on the high schools in rural has obtained some certain results, there still remains many deficiencies.Through the survey, I found that the main results of the research learning courses in Han bin rural high schools are:1) The research learning course has already been preliminarily implemented.2) The need of the research learning course has been identified to some degree.3) The value of the research learning course has been approved.4) Positive changes have been brought to students.5) The evaluation way of research learning has been diversified. The main existing inadequacies are:Firstly, there is still a certain gap between the recent situation to set up the research learning and the requirements of the Ministry of Education. Secondly, the propaganda of the research learning courses is not so enough. Thirdly, the qualities of the instructors are to be further improved. Fourthly, the course management system needs to be consummated. Fifthly, the teaching and learning conditions to carry out the research learning are in short. According to the existing problems and shortcomings, the countermeasures and suggestions I put forward are:First of all, the propaganda of the course should be increased and the thinking and understanding way of the teachers and students should also be changed. Then, a supporting reform should be well done. What’s more, input for the research learning needs to be increased so as to provide funding for it to be better carried out. At last, we need to bring regional advantages into full play and carry out the research learning according to local conditions.Based on the investigation, the article also describes the need for an research learning in rural high schools, the advantages to carry out a inquiry learning and how can a biology teacher be competent to guide the work of research study in the biological disciplines.
