As an important part of mathematics teaching, the teaching of mathematical exercises,especially in the senior high school, can directly affect the quality of mathematics teaching. Inorder to achieve a better teaching of mathematical exercises, the problems in the exercisesteaching should be seen and be solved. But think further, it is the problems in the use ofmathematical exercises that leads to these problems, and it is the inherent understanding on thefunction of mathematical exercises that controls the use of mathematical exercises. Therefore, astudy on the use and function of mathematical exercises is necessary. To solve the problems inthe teaching of mathematical exercises, or to promote the teaching of mathematical exercises,must have a deep understanding to the function of mathematical exercises and solve theproblems in the use of mathematical exercises.In order to show the use of mathematical exercises clear, the paper makes a classificationof mathematical exercises in the angle of use, and makes division of its process into two stages:select and use. At the same time, according to the problems in teaching of mathematicalexercises, it summarizes three problems on the use of mathematical exercises. The threeproblems are recorded as follows: the randomness and blindness, the one-sidedness, thelimitations.The function of mathematical exercises needs a re-understanding. According to therelevant literature, the paper analyses the function of exercises, and divides it into three levels.The three are denoted as follows: meaningless level, consolidation level, control level. Duringmathematics teaching the level of function of mathematical exercises should be improvedconsciously.Based on the above and focused on the practice, the paper then discusses the selection anduse of mathematical exercises. In this regard, the paper points out that selection of exercisesshould follow two principles. That is, when to select, a teacher should preset his or her teachingpurpose and take the solution into account, and even the solution should put forefront. On theother hand, the paper discusses the principles and methods when teaching mathematicalexercises, and gives a case of that. Finally, it gives a test, and the result of that shows it iseffective to value the use and function of exercises. Since teaching is a long-term process, agood math exercises teaching depends on a profound understanding of function of exercisesand needs a long-term continuous practice and accumulation during mathematics teaching. Theexamples of exercises given in the whole paper can be regarded as a show of this view.
