In recent times, cultivating innovation abilities has become the goal of talent training, the postgraduate students, as a main source of innovation abilities, are at the highest level of higher education. In the postgraduate education, its core is the innovation of postgraduate students’cultivation, therefore, how to cultivate the postgraduate students’innovation ability, to foster the innovation of postgraduate students in what way, become a topic of common concerns. Discipline competition is a mass organization of science and technology activity facing the university students, the effective approach to cultivate innovation abilities and promote the education teaching reform, and one of the important means to cultivate the innovation ability of the university postgraduate.The study found that, at present the overall level of postgraduate students’ innovation abilities are not high in our country; The motivation, to attend the mathematical contest in modeling, the topic content, the form and guidance of discipline competition, which have invisibly developed the postgraduate students’ innovation abilities; And the postgraduate students’gender, professional and school to postgraduate students’innovation ability category has no significant influence. Based on the point of view of the discipline competition to explore the causes, thus summarized as promotion range of discipline competition is small, postgraduate students’understanding of the discipline competition is not enough, ignorance of the role of discipline competition; Postgraduate students’ enthusiasm of participation in discipline competition is not high, lack of the incentive mechanism; In the aspect of student training, paying excessive attention to books and exams, neglecting the application and practice; Entry security and communication of discipline competition remain to be strengthened. In view of the above reasons, it is necessary to complete the organization and publicity, to increase teachers’ and students’ awareness of discipline competition; Establish and improve the incentive mechanism of discipline competition, arousing the enthusiasm of teachers and students to participate in discipline competition;Build practice platform and cultivate the innovative application ability;Increase resources investment, perfect operation guarantee system of discipline competition and give full play to the role of discipline competition to promote the innovation of postgraduate students effectively.
