With the development of the technology of our society, people get all kinds ofinformation and study a variety of knowledge and skills on the basis of the process of reading.In China, students of English have to rely on reading to improve their English levels for lackof real English context. Senior English Curriculum Standards(2003) also lists in detail thegoals of English reading teaching, emphasizing the importance of reading in the whole seniorperiod. However, English teachers in high schools are facing a lot of problems in theirclassroom reading teaching. They are eager to improve the efficiency of their reading class.Therefore, we need to analyze the problems of current English reading teaching and try toprovide a more efficient way to help improve students’ reading abilities.This research is based on learning strategies of second language learning and alsotheories related to reading strategies. The writer chose a Senior3science class to carry outthis research. The English level of the class used to be the last in the whole grade before thetraining but the students are eager to study and show great passion in learning English, so thewriter is very confident that the students will improve a lot after the research. In this research,the students were first surveyed and interviewed about whether they have mastered somenecessary reading strategies in order to find their strengths and weakness in reading.Meanwhile, six of the students were randomly chosen to be interviewed about some detailsrelated to their reading habits and strategy awareness. Besides, the students were tested abouttheir reading abilities. Afterwards, the class was trained purposefully in the regular classes,special reading strategies classes and also after-class reading instructions and supervision.Finally, the students were surveyed with the same questions and tested with similar readingexercises after the research to see how much they had improved.After comparing students’ marks before and after the training, the writer found that thereappeared great progress in the marks after the training. This proves this training is veryeffective and efficient. Therefore, English teachers should raise their awareness of theimportance of reading strategy training in their reading classes, and make every effort toimprove the quality of their reading teaching, which will serve as a necessity to improvestudents’ reading abilities.
