Reading possesses a very important position in English learning and correspondingly reading teaching plays a key role in English teaching."To optimize (students’) learning style is to improve (students’) learning autonomy" is one of the basic notions of the New National Standard for English Curriculum. Objectively, the status of autonomous reading ability of high school student in English is not optimistic. There are several factors which affect its formation. However, the author believed that the major factor was still a student lack of reading emotion, vocabulary, and lack of reading strategies and teachers’obsolete teaching concepts.At present, a new teaching auxiliary tool, known as "guided learning plan" is being widely practiced in many schools in China. The teaching activity named as "Teaching With the Help of the Guided Learning Plans" is held in Our school, Hengyang NO.2Middle School. The author did an empirical research on English reading teaching with the help of guided learning plans. The aims are as follows:first, is it effective to conduct the teaching of reading with the guided learning plans? Second, can we foster students’ autonomous reading ability in English with the help of guided learning plans?The author investigated teachers and students from Hengyang No.2 Middle School about the using of guided learning plans through teachers’ and students’feedback. Then the author designed guided learning plans in view of students’needs to encourage the students’autonomous reading. In order to verify its effectiveness, the author carried out an experiment. In this thesis, the methods are as follows:the literature analysis, questionnaire survey, a combination of interviews and teaching experiments in English teaching theory. Taking constructivism and humanistic theory as basis, according to the related research on the teaching of reading in English, the author is trying to explore the teaching strategy of autonomous reading in English in high school with the help of guided learning plans.The result shows that guided learning plan is better than traditional teaching method. When we use this guided learning plan, we should pay more attention to the design and implementation. We do hope that this thesis can benefit English teachers during the reform in new basic curriculum.
