Poverty-stricken students have become a special group in Chinese vocational colleges, and also attracted the attention from all walks of life. It is a bounden duty for a vocational college educator to conduct a comprehensive and in-depth study of the aid model for the poverty-stricken students in vocational colleges, which has direct influence on the reform and development of Chinese higher education as well as on thousands of families related. The aid to the poverty-stricken students in Chinese vocational colleges has gone through grants-in-aid to the coexistence of grants and scholarships, and then to the coexistence of scholarships and student loans, at last, to the formation and optimization of the five-in-one aid system. On the basis of the definition of the poverty-stricken students in vocational colleges and their general situation and the aid model as well, the thesis discusses a series of problems in the aid system for the poverty-stricken students, such as the weakening function of the scholarship aiding the poor, the imperfection of the credit system for the student loan, the unsmooth channels for the work-study students. What’s more, free aid fosters the students’dependent mentality. The root causes for such problems lie in the lack of external environment, the insufficient understanding of the aiding function, asymmetric information and the absence of social responsibility. In order to optimize the aid system for the poverty-stricken students in vocational colleges, the government, vocational colleges and society should make joint efforts. First, the government should shoulder the responsibility for broadening the channels of collecting funds and increasing financial support. As for the vocational colleges, they can make full use of their own advantages in propaganda and academic research to attract social aid through cooperation. Social groups and individuals, as the indirect beneficiaries, should also do their part to aid the poverty-stricken students in vocational colleges.
