History atlases are supporting textbooks which are written according to the syllabus and curriculum standard issued by the state education commission for History courses. They are essential to middle school students when learning History. History atlases have come into being since the1950s when People’s Republic of China was founded. Shanghai experienced the first period Curriculum Revolution in1988and the second ones in1998and the history textbooks have changed a lot since then. With the changes of the textbooks, the history atlases have also changed. This thesis analyzes those changes in forms and functions. Also it discusses the ways teachers use atlases and the steps in which students learn to use them in class, which will provide reference for the application of atlases for history teachers. The thesis is made up of three parts, the introduction, the main body and the conclusion.The introduction mainly explains the significance, the trend and the thought of the study.The main body consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the development of atlases. It discusses the changes in content, form and the relationship with the textbook since the second Curriculum Revolution.The second chapter explains the changes in function by constructing the historical space concept, proving the truth of history and the stage of the research learning. In addition, the second chapter also analyzes the reasons for the changes.The third chapter concludes the problems which exist in using atlases. The ways when the students use atlases. What’s more, it explores how teachers exploit and apply atlases through teaching practice. And this can be a helpful reference to the flour mills, hoping teachers in shanghai will keep interested in this problem and go on exploring it.The conclusion put forward the problems and suggestions of improvements by comparing the features of the atlases issued by Planet Map Publishing House and Geological Publishing House.
