Mathematical ideas and methods are the essence of mathematics, and they are alsoimportant components of high school mathematics. For a long time, high school teachers andstudents just understand the true meaning and value of mathematics by learning mathematicalideas and the method. In this paper, we study the thought of function and equation which isone important thought in my teaching procedure.There are many good research results and teaching experience about the thought offunction and equation. These researches mainly discuss the relation between differentmathematical ideas and methods, but it is seldom mentioned about how to apply mathematicalideas and methods during teaching procedure in general high school.This article mainly discuss about how to apply the thought of function and equationduring mathematical teaching procedure in general high school. Firstly, we collect the existingresearches and get a relative comprehensive understanding about mathematical ideas andmethods. Secondly, we carry out some questionnaires among maths teachers and students inmy school and interview with some mathematics teachers. Thirdly, we get a comprehensiveunderstanding about the mathematical thought and method of function and equation in generalhigh school by comparing five years’ National Entrance Examination; Finally, we get theconclusion that the functional and equational thoughts and methods must be performedduring the mathematical teaching procedure in general high school.This paper is mainly divided into four parts: the first part gives the reason for studyingthe functional and equational thoughts and methods in general high school; the second partgives the meaning of functional and equational methods and some present research results. Italso refers to the association between the functional and equational thoughts and methods andother common methods; the third part is about the practical research on mathematical thoughtand method of the function and equation; the fourth part covers the effective teaching modelof functional and equational methods according to my own teaching experience. Meanwhile itgives the corresponding teaching suggestions about how to apply the thought and method offunction and equation in general high school.
