With the deepening of China’s reform and opening up policy and the continuous development of the socialist modernization drive in recent years, doing voluntary service has become a direct way for students to get in touch with the society and make contribution to the country. As a noble social cause, voluntary service advocates "friendship, devotion, assistance and progress". Such spirit continues to inspire a large number of young college students to actively participate in and contribute to the development of China’s voluntary service. By doing so, students establish correct outlook on life and value, form great ideological and moral quality, improve various abilities, and promote social harmony, progress and spiritual civilization. The voluntary service of Chinese college students is still in the period of social transformation. The overall development is moving forward and upward and consistent with China’s current national conditions to a certain extent. However, there is a certain gap between China and some western developed countries, especially the United States in terms of values, organizational management and operation mechanism of voluntary services. The overall development of China’s voluntary service is not mature enough. This paper introduces the development stages, main areas, characteristics and significance of the voluntary service of Chinese college students. Based on that, it further analyzes the managerial problems of the voluntary service of Chinese college students from the perspectives of the external environment, volunteer organizations and volunteers themselves. Meanwhile, it proposes the countermeasures of improving the management of the voluntary service of Chinese college students by comparing the differences of the voluntary services of Chinese and American college students in values and organization, management and operating mechanisms. China should accelerate national legislation, strengthen funding support, enhance social recognition and improve supporting policies to create a favorable voluntary environment for college students. China should improve recruitment, training, incentive, distribution and coordination mechanisms to encourage self-governance of voluntary organizations. China should promote the constant self-improvement of college volunteers by enhancing service awareness and stimulating service enthusiasm.
