Thinking level and thinking ability play an important role in a person’s career. It’s the beststage to develop abstract thinking in high schools. The new teaching reform pays attention notonly to students’ knowledge, but also to their thinking ability. Developing abstract thinkingability in high schools is the ultimate goal of the teaching of physics. The first part of the paper describes the meaning of developing abstract thinking ability andthe research status. We obtain first-hand information by sorting out the existing theories andmethods and purposely making surveys in high school students on an experimentalbasis.Physics is a scientific discipline requiring students to take advantage of comparison andclassification, analysis and synthesis, judgment and reasoning, abstraction and generality andinductive and deductive methods to understand the physical concepts and physics principlesof law, to use judgment, reasoning and other forms of thinking to master the physical thingsand physical laws and to apply the knowledge to the practice of life.In the second part, by our studying the training status quo of the high school physicsteaching, abstract thinking ability is divided into four training parts: newly-teaching classes, exercise classes, experimental courses and extracurricular activities. In newly-teaching classes,we should pay attention to well designing teaching contents ahead of the teaching, setting upreasonable logic structures, strengthening teaching contents of course and effect analysis anddetermining the scientific and dialectical relations of the teaching contents. In exercise classes,we should pay attention to developing the students’ abstract thinking ability in the course ofthe topic analysis and the problem solving process. Also we can develop it through the typicalproblems. In experimental courses, we should pay attention to guiding students to observeexperiments, understanding abstract principles by specific experimental phenomena, guidingthem to improve the experiments, perfecting the specific experiments through the abstractteaching, guiding students to develop new experimental models, analyzing errors and trainingthe abstract thinking ability of students. In extracurricular activities, we should pay attentionto guiding students to read physical materials, enriching knowledge of physics, making objectmodels and process models and strengthening them in practice. In these processes, weshould train students to apply the methods of abstract thinking and strengthen thedevelopment of it in many aspects and in multi levels. The third part of the paper is a summary of the entire process. Through teaching practice, physics teaching emphasizing on the cultivation of students’ abstract thinking ability will notaffect students’ achievements, but cam reduce students studying physics effort, promotelearning progress, further promote the progress of students in other disciplines and even affectthe development of the students’ life.
