Since the Ministry of Education issued The National Curriculum Standards forEnglish Education in2001, educators have begun to further pay attention to NewCurriculum reformation and Quality-oriented Education to cater for the new challenges.Learning-plan guided teaching was put forward under the background of the newcurriculum reform. The learning plan is a learning proposal designed according to newcurriculum standard, students’ cognitive level, knowledge and experiences, aiming todirect the students to build their knowledge and develop their autonomous learning ability.Currently, many schools apply the learning-plan guided teaching model to carry out theteaching reform, among which is The Experimental Middle School of Shanxi NormalUniversity (EMSSNU, for short). In this study, the author chose EMSSNU to study, aiming to learn about the effects of the application of such model on the English teachingand learning, and what possible problem exists in their teaching. In this investigation, questionnaire, interview and observation were employed, and187senior high middle school students from the Second Grade and10English teachers ofthese students were investigated. According to the results and discussion of theinvestigation, effects of the application of learning-plan guided teaching in EMSSNU canbe concluded in the following aspects:(1) Students’ autonomous learning ability iscultivated.(2) Both teachers’ and students’ awareness of cooperation are enhanced.(3)Students do better in their learning performance.(4) Both the teaching efficiency and thelearning efficiency are greatly improved.(5) Teachers’ professional development isimproved. At the same time, the major problems include the following:(1) It is difficultfor teachers to control the time allotment in class.(2) At the earlier stage of designinglearning plan, it is difficult to design learning plan to meet every student’s need.(3) Thereis no agreement on the criteria to assess a learning plan. Finally, based on the analysis of the questionnaires, interviews and classroom observation, some suggestions are put forward on the application of learning-plan guidedteaching in senior high school English teaching.(1) English teaching should pay moreattention to the students’ real situation, through the learning plan to know students’learning foundation and learning preparations, so that the teachers can implementappropriate teaching tactics.(2) The implementation of learning-plan teaching requireschanges in the role of both teachers and students. Teachers should clarify roles betweenteachers and students. The teachers’ roles are not weakened but strengthen. Students alsoshould adapt to the role that learner as the center.(3) There is no teaching model itself canguarantee it is the only perfect one. Therefore, learning-plan guided teaching model shouldalso combine with other teaching methods.
