The status of the Chinese language in the world is being enhanced thanks to the rapid development of China, which has also brought teaching Chinese as a second language into a new stage. The enormous efforts put in by teachers and researchers during its development process have led to remarkable achievements and helped lay solid foundation in terms of the theoretical study of the Chinese language as well as grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Nevertheless, problems do exist in the course of Chinese teaching. This study suggests that although some systems have been gradually formed in the theoretical and pedagogical research of the general vocabulary, the area of vocabulary teaching, which includes the teaching of Chinese idioms, has not been given due attention to, and thus it is still attached to the teaching of the general vocabulary.Idiom teaching is both crucial and difficult in teaching Chinese vocabulary; however, we should view it more as a kind of very valuable resource to teach the language and the Chinese culture. The first chapter of the thesis is a brief overview of the previous research carried out on idiom teaching in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, which mainly consists of the new idea of separating the study of vocabulary from that of the language, and the methods of teaching Chinese Idioms. Based on the analysis of the previous studies, the author seeks to summarize some suitable theories as the research background for the instructional design of this thesis. According to the idea of separating the study of vocabulary from that of the language mentioned above, a teaching experiment named "Idiom Micro-course" is designed, and the teaching plans are made on the basis of the required idioms in the new HSK-6.The author has applied the teaching plans to actual teaching practice, taking three parallel classes of grade two in some International High School in Shanghai, and assessed the effectiveness through questionnaires, interviews and tests. Based on the result of above-mentioned methods, some useful attempts have been made, problems and insufficiencies discovered and plausible solutions proposed in the thesis.
