Students’ physical health is not concern their individual development, further relate to one region or even the great revival of the entire China nationality. As one developing country, China has more than1.3billion people with a large part of rural population; rural students account for a high proportion and countryside is the main battlefield of developing basic education. Physical education in rural schools is a vital part of rural compulsory education. Education would be carried out for all students as well as students’ quality can be improved comprehensively only by paying special attention to the physical education in rural schools. As a result, we must pay enough attention to the physical education in rural schools.In the present paper, a detailed and in-depth analysis of the physical education of rural middle schools in Western Hunan by the documentation method, interviewing method, questionnaire method and so on with the purpose of summarizing both the experience and problems in the process of physical development of rural middle schools in Western Hunan, formulating corresponding measures for the relevant education departments, and providing the reference for changing the present situation of physical education in rural schools. The conclusions of this study could be summed up to the following four.1.The lag of the conception of both the leaders of rural middle schools in Western Hunan and the rural social groups constitutes the limitation on the development of the physical education of rural middle schools in Western Hunan.2.The implementation situation of carrying out the new curriculum standard in the physical education of rural middle schools in Western Hunan is not optimistic as a large proportion of schools adopt the sheep type education without putting the new educational concept into practical teaching thoroughly. This means that the setting of P.E. classes in many schools do not meet the national standard; and the extracurricular activities, the execution on P.E. teaching materials, implementation of teaching plans and the students grades standard are all not very ideal which need a further improvement.3. The worrying problems which exist in the physical development of rural middle schools in Western Hunan. For example, the serious shortage of middle school physical education teachers, the overmuch rejuvenation of these teachers, their heavy workload, and their low treatment compared to the teachers of other subjects; and at the meanwhile the imperfection of the work on teachers’continuing education training and the inadequate training could not meet the requirements of curriculum reform on physical education.4.The insufficient of investment on both the equipments and found cannot satisfy the needs for teaching, training and extracurricular activities, and this has great impact on the school sports development.5.The education departments at all levels of Western Hunan have not fully displayed the function of guiding and supervising on the specific implementation of the rural schools physic education.Basing on the investigation and analysis of the present situation of the physical education of rural middle schools in Western Hunan, the factors which make effect on the physic development of rural middle schools in Western Hunan have been found out as well as the path and method for improving the physical education of rural middle schools in Western Hunan. And then, some countermeasures are also proposed.1.The status of school physical education should be paid more attention and the school sports work should be carried out well.2.Under the development of the west regions, the construction of rural middle school sports facilities should be strengthened, the material environment of school sports should be improved, and the investment in middle schools physical education should be increased.3.The construction of teachers should be strengthened and the P.E. teachers’quality should be improved overall in order to meet the needs of the new curriculum reform.4.The traditional sports curriculum resources of Western Hunan ought to be excavated fully by selecting or filtering the students’favorite curriculum resources into classroom teaching. This can fill the lack of content of the present P.E. class and make it work in concert with the syllabus stipulated teaching material. In this way. not only the physical education outline is carried out, but also the national traditional culture is being protected and inherited.5.The supervision and examination of the school sports work should be strengthened; that is. the higher education departments and schools should strengthen management in order to escort the rural school physical education through standardizing management and supervision.
