It is the vocabulary that plays an important part in the English study. In the last20years, anumber of researchers and experts have made an effort to study the vocabulary learningstrategies, which gains great achievements. Many facts have proved that acquiring a largenumber of vocabularies is essential in the successful foreign language learning.Some experts study on the good students’ effective vocabulary learning strategies, sometry to explore the specific vocabulary learning strategies used by a peculiar group of learnersand others describe the differences of strategies between the female and the male. However,few studies are carried on the vocational school students’ vocabulary learning strategies. Aswe all know that the strategies used by vocational school students are different from thoseused by other school students. This dissertation carries out an investigation on vocabularylearning, which explores two aspects by the questionnaires and the mid-term and final termEnglish test papers. On one hand, this paper studies on the selection and employment ofvocabulary learning strategies among the vocational school students in China, on the otherhand, it focuses on discovering the correlation between vocabulary learning strategies andacademic achievements in English tests. The paper draws a conclusion that fostering variousand effective vocabulary learning strategies for the students is bound to improve their Englishcompetence. What’s more, the author has summarized a variety of vocabulary learningstrategies suitable for the students of the Secondary Vocational School, such as thememorizing strategies, the word formation strategies and so on.At last the essay proposes some suggestions available for the English vocabulary teachingof the Secondary Vocational School and hopes that it will instruct the English teaching ofSecondary Vocational School at present. The paper emphasizes that teachers in SecondaryVocational School are supposed to change their traditional teaching way and foster students tolearn to use effective vocabulary learning strategies as soon as possible, which is of greatsignificance in our English teaching.
