With the development of both the Chinese and Korean economy, increasing collaborationand economy ties, more Koreans are now choosing to learn Chinese as a second language.This thesis is based on Korean High school students. Like most other Chinese foreignlanguage learners, these students experience the same challenges and exhibit common typesof pronunciation errors. This thesis explores in details these pronunciation errors and tries toidentify the root cause. Several practical and efficient strategies are proposed for addressingthese pronunciation challenges. It is hope that these proposal with be in some way useful toboth students and teachers of the Chinese language.The thesis is subdivided into five parts. The first part is divided into1) The background andmotivation for writing the thesis and2) literature review. The second part explores commonpronunciation errors. The major class of errors reviewed are related to1) consonantsb,p,f,zh,ch,sh,z,c,s,j,q,x,l,r.2) compound vowels, o,e,ü,üe,ün3) pronunciationusing the different tones, and4) phonetic changes. The third section of the thesis seeks toidentify the main reasons for these learning challenges. The root causes identified are1)interlingual error,2) intralingual error,3) training error and4) finally the layout of theChinese Phonetic alphabet. The fourth section of the thesis presents some practical solutionand strategies for addressing these learning and pronunciation challenges. The strategiesprovided focus on1) Identifying the similarities and differences between Korean and Chineselanguage to minimize interlingual errors2) Avoiding generalization and placing greateremphasis of applying language and pronunciation rules within their correct context so as tominimize intralingual errors3) The textbooks, the quality of the teachers and the design oflesson plan4) Suggestions and recommendations into ways for improving the layout of theChinese phonetic alphabet. The thesis closes with the conclusions.
