School-based research, an important form of teacher continuing education with the threecore elements of teachers’ self-examination, peer coaching and expert coaching, becomes thekey components for better harmonization of teacher professional development, as itemphasizes that it is teachers and in the school that consciously carry on educationalresearches and professional studies based on their own school practice experience, whichanswers for schools and teachers’ actual demands, brings out teachers’ initiative forprofessional study and enhances teachers’ teaching capacity, thus to promote theirprofessional development.As the new curriculum reform goes on in Hainan Province, Hainan administrativedepartments of education push forward school-based research in primary schools and highschools. With a review of the status in quo of school-based research in Haikou ordinary highschools based on an empirical investigation, this paper, in the visual angle of teachers, thesubject of school-based research, provides an analytical account on the achievements andproblems on the present school-based research activities in Haikou ordinary high schools.This paper finds out that teachers consciously do self-examination, peer coaching becomesmuch common among young and middle-aged teachers in their daily work, studies onprofessional concepts and ethics, professional knowledge, professional skills as well aseducational researches have got quite balanced development, and teachers’ internalmotivation for school-based research is much better than the external one. Jet the problems liein the shortage of expert coaching, the lack of subject studies and the low internal motivationof female teachers for school-based research. After analyzing the reasons from individuals ofteachers, family, school and society, this paper tries to raise some strategies to pushschool-based research in Haikou from the perspective of teachers and schools, which requiresteachers establish complete professional development plans, expert coaching for teachers bestrengthened, subject studies be reinforced to increase teachers’ researching ability, andfemale teachers be cared for to promote their professional development with full use offemales’ sensitivity characteristics.
