A Study On The Correlation Between Ports And Their Economic Hinterland

Review the development history of coastal city in china, we can find that if a city with alarge port, its development will be faster than others, such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou andShanghai ect. Port plays an important role in the development of regional economic, however, ifa port wants to maintain this role, not only need its own efforts, but also need the support fromits hinterland. If the hinterland of port can effectively use the port, which has an importantinfluence for the hinterland.Firstly make a summary about previous research achievements, and then from threedifferent angels make analysis, namely time, supply and demand, the transportation role of port.Secondly make a comprehensive analysis between ports and the hinterland by qualitative andquantitative methods, the content divided into five parts. First make a analysis between portsand their hinterlands. Second make analysis of the contribution about port to its hinterland, andvice versa. Three make a comparison about three different ports and their hinterlands by VARmodel. Four analyses the effectiveness of both sides. Five analyses the coordination about threedifferent ports and cities.The results as following: VAR analyses show that the impact of Guangzhou port and itshinterland for each other is relative stable. Shanghai port and Shenzhen port have positivereaction about the influence of their hinterland, which can’t last for long time. With the importof Shanghai port and Shenzhen port on their hinterland, this has an inverse U shape.Effectiveness of analysis shows that: the hinterland of Guangzhou port play a more effectiverole in the development, so does the hinterland of Shenzhen port; Shanghai port and itshinterland play a same role in each other development. Coordination analysis shows that therelation of Guangzhou port and Guangzhou city is relative coordinate, the scale of Shenzhenport is small for Shenzhen city, in a period of time the relation of Shanghai port and Shanghaicity is relative coordinate, however, the scale of Shanghai port need to be raised.
