With the continuous progress of society, it has gradually become consensus worldwide that the ultimate goal of social development is to improve life quality for all people. This idea has been and will always be put at the premium in the concepts of Overall Construction of Comparatively Well-off Society, People Oriented and Building a Harmonious Society in the Scientific concept of Development, as life quality is a comprehensive reflection of economic development and civilization in a country or region. Thirty years’ Reform and Opening-up in China, on one hand, has achieved remarkable success in economics and urbanization, and enhanced people’ life quality on the whole; on the other hand, it is deteriorating some aspects of citizens’life. There is a lacking of sound coordination between economics and life quality in cities; hence an in-depth research is very important on life quality as well as its relationship with economic development of the specific but big group in the current critical period of urbanization for China.Based on the social development of People-Oriented, the Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy theory, the Sustainable Development concept, the systems engineering and other series of theoretical foundation, this thesis begins systematical explanation of relation between life quality and economic development, the indicators systems of quality of life for urban residents and economic development have been built, then it is followed by statistically description analysis from vertical and lateral angles, and canonical correlation analysis, and ends with suggestions promote economic development and improve the quality of life for urban residents. There are six parts in this paper.Chapter 1 is prolegomenon, including research background and significance, the theoretical basis of study quality of life, research results of the quality of life at home and abroad, the writer’s comments, and my angle of this research and methods.Chapter 2 explores relationship between life quality and economic development. It examines the differences and connection between economic growth and economic development, level of living and quality of life, so as to define the research object. And then the relationship has been specifically addressed from six aspects.Chapter 3 designs index systems of life quality and economic development for urban residents. Based on the theory of indicators and index system designing, it claims the designing principles of life quality index system, and describes preliminarily the system and indicating descriptions from three systems of economy, social, resources and environment. Also, the economic development index system is designed from the volume and speed, structure, proportion and efficiency.Chapter 4 is about the descriptive statistics analysis of the quality of life for urban residents. Firstly, the index system of quality of life for urban residents is simplified by a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, so as to determine the final index system for next empirical analysis. Then all levels of life quality in the development for urban residents in China’s various regions are sorted from the horizontal angle, and it comes to conclusion that there is a spatial disequilibrium of economic development and the quality of life for urban residents. And then from the vertical angle, the paper analyzes the change trend of all levels on the life quality across the country in the whole 21st century, and thus comes to a conclusion that the time-varying in economic development and quality of life for urban residents is not synchronized.Chapter 5 analyzes the relation by using the canonical correlation analysis. In this chapter, the idea and principle of the canonical correlation analysis are explained. Two sets of variables, which are typically related to empirical analysis, are chosen and analyzed by statistical software SAS to obtain the canonical correlation coefficients and their tests. According to the test results, a linear model is built and then the paper analyzes typical coefficient, typical structure, redundancy, and multiple determination co-efficiency, which can show the close relationship between economic development and the quality of life for urban residents, as well as how the two affect each other.According to the theoretical research and empirical analysis in preceding chapters, in Chapter 6 there are eight corresponding countermeasures and suggestions put forward, which can promote the economic development and further improve the quality of life for urban residents. There are some innovations in this paper. The first is the research perspective, which breaks through the comprehensive evaluation of the quality of life in many studies currently, and obtains the economic development to start, an important aspect of quality of life, then research the relationship between the quality of life for urban residents and economic development. The second is the unique research technique, different from the common analytic methods, such as simple related analysis, factorial analysis, cluster analysis and so on. Instead, it uses canonical correlation, one of the multi-dimensional statistical methods, to thoroughly analyze the relationship of the two. Moreover, in the index choice method, it uses the qualitative and the quota unifies, and especially in the quota aspect it uses the enormous not correlation method.
