In recent years, Mobile Internet in China has made rapid development, and many companies have entered the competition in this field, hoping to get a leading position in the industrial chain. Competition in the market today has just been more than a price war or a marketing war, the patent war is also intensifying. For example, after losing the bid for Nortel, Google has succeeding in the acquisition of Motorola for $12.5 billion, which shocked the world. In fact, the core technology is an important factor that affecting the development of a company. A scientific patent portfolio must be made in the fierce market competition avoiding being controlled by others in the technology. Therefore, with the rise of Mobile Internet, carrying out related research and making patent portfolio actively is particularly important. Mobile IPv6 is the basic technology for Mobile Internet, so patent analysis for this area is significant. This paper carries out the patent analysis and produces a patent map of Mobile IPv6 which shows the general patent layout in this field and also helps to identify the core patents and R&D organizations. Based on the results above, this paper gives a proposal to make a scientific patent portfolio. The paper select Mobile IPv6 as search keywords, and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as the patent sources for the retrieval of patent documents. Data items such as IPC Classifications, patent owners and the citation relationship collected from the patent literatures are treated as the analysis objects. A combination of Patent Map and Social Network analysis are used as analysis methods. The paper reveals the research strengths of the patent owners through Patent Map analysis. The method of Social Network is suitable for the analysis of the relationship, so it is used to analysis the patent citation relations. The paper selects Degree and Betweenness as indicators to explore the core patents and the core patent owners. The core patents reveal the hot spots and directions of technical research, while the core patent owners can facilitate the activities of finding competitors and tracking competitors’ R & D activities. Based on these findings, this paper presents a proposal to make a scientific patent portfolio.
