The transportation plays a very important role in the social andeconomic life, which is a hot topic of the study of economicgeography. With regard to the impact of transportation on regionaleconomic growth, some scholars asserted that the impact of trafficon regional economic growth was always positive, which mean thatthe more developed the regional transportation was, the impactgreater the transportation on regional economic development had. However, some scholars asserted that whether the transportationhad a role in promoting economic growth depended on someconditions. They thought that only when the transportation andregional economic development coordinated, the transportationcould plays its due role. In contrast, if the transportation developedin advance or lagged in the economic development, thetransportation was not conducive to the regional economic growth.Whether is the promoting role of the transportation on the economicdevelopment conditional? This is the issue of this paper.According to the scope of the transportation connection, theroad traffic conditions can be divided into regional external traffic conditions and intra-regional traffic. At present, many scholars onlyfocused the relationship between the regional externaltransportation and regional economic development and seldomstudied the impact of intra-regional traffic on the regional economicdevelopment. So I have selected a specific region and studied theimpact of intra-region traffic on the regional economic developmentin this paper. The results show as follows. Firstly, in terms of equilibrium, thegaps of the development of the intra-regional road traffic, the percapita GDP and industrial structure between these suburbandistricts of Beijing are big. In contrast, the gap in per capita incomeof residents is small. Secondly, from the change of all indices forfive years, we can find that the value of the intra-regional roadtraffic between these suburban districts, per capita GDP and theliving standard of residents had accelerated at first and sloweddown then. On the contrary, the value of the industrial structure hadchanged slow at first and then accelerated. Thirdly, in the past fiveyears, the gaps of the density of road networks and the proportion ofnon-agricultural industry between these districts of Beijing hadreduced. While the gap between per capita GDP had graduallywidened and the gaps of the per capita disposable income of urbanresidents and rural residents still kept unchanged. Fourthly, theroad network density and per capita GDP of these districts ofBeijing have a weak positive correlation which is very significant. So we can conclude that the better the intra-regional road traffic is,the higher the GDP become. According to intra-regional road trafficand economic theory, we can conclude that the development of intra-regional road traffic can contribute to the regional economicdevelopment or that the intra-regional road traffic and the regionaleconomy can promote mutually. From the relation analysis of thedensity of road networks, non-agricultural industry, the proportionof urban residents, the disposable income per capita of urbanresidents and net income of rural residents, the correlations of themare not significant. Thus we can conclude that the improvement ofintra-regional road traffic has nothing with the upgrading of regionalindustrial structure and the income levels of residents. The main innovations of this paper are as follows. Firstly, a fewstudies had focused on the impacts of the intra-regional traffic onthe regional economic development which are the issue I concern.Secondly, in addition to per capita GDP, I have also concerned aboutthe impact of intra-regional road traffic on the changes in theindustrial structure and income level of the residents which is lessconcerned about. Lastly, I adopt a statistical method instead of theeconomics of the medal law, to analyze the correlation of the datain the process of the study of the relationship between theintra-regional road traffic and regional economic development, which can make up for the weak of economic theory that is too deal. However, due to the difficulty of data acquisition and thelimitations of research methods, some regrets are also left in thispaper. The main imperfections are as follows. Firstly, as theresearch objects that the outer suburbs of Beijing are smallerregional scales and the number of the subjects is also smaller, theconclusions may not be universal. If we select the larger regions,we couldn’t forecast what kind of relationship exists between the intra-regional road traffic and regional economic development.Perhaps other different conclusions are drawn if we study therelationships of the intra-regional road traffic and economicdevelopment of other regions. Secondly, because of the small sizeof the areas selected and the difficulty of data acquisition, I onlystudy the impacts of the intra-regional road traffic on the regionaleconomic development but not the impacts of the other type oftraffic on the regional economic development. Thirdly, due to thecapacity and the data of this paper, I don’t further study why suchrelationships of the intra-regional road traffic and regional economyexist. As to the imperfection of this paper, I hope that I can furtherdiscuss and study this issue in the future. The prospects of thisstudy are as follows. Firstly, in view of the relatively small objects inthis paper, I intend to select large areas, such as Beijing, Tianjin,Shanghai and other large cities to study the impacts of theintra-regional road traffic with the same method, in order to analyzewhether the same conclusions as that I study in the outer suburbs ofBeijing. Secondly, in this paper, I mainly discuss the impacts of theintra-regional road traffic on the various aspects of the regionaleconomy, but whether the same conclusion exist if we analyze therelation of the regional external traffic and the regional economy, itneed further study. In the later study, I intend to select some indicessuch as the accessibility, the proportion of per capita GDP,non-agricultural industry proportion and the disposable income percapita of urban residents and rural residents to further study therelation of regional external transport and all aspects of economy.
