Traffic congestion is a common problem in metropolitan cities nationally and internationally. With traffic congestion becoming more and more serious in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the government and citizens have payed much attention to solving the problem. Take Tianjin for example, the overspeed of the motor vehicles is becoming more and more serious, the contradiction between supply and demand of the city transportation has become increasingly prominent. If the problem can not be dealt with efficiently, traffic congestion problem will spread to other areas and the transportation system in Tianjin will be seriously affected. As a result, it will not only reduce traffic efficiency and life quality of the citizens, but also influence the sustainable and healthy development of the society. Therefore, attention should be payed to the research of comprehensive measures on solving traffic congestion problems which are based on experience of other cities nationally and internationally. This thesis can be divided into five chapters, including introduction and the main body. The first chapter is introduction. It mainly focuses on the current situation in dealing with traffic congestion nationally and internationally. All these factors jointly contribute to traffic congestion in Tianjin. The fourth chapter focuses on the suggestions and measures dealing with traffic congestion nationally and internationally. In this chapter, strategies carried out by foreign cities are discussed, in order to summarize the experience and suggestions in dealing with the problem. Apart from this, the development in dealing with traffic congestion nationwide has been stated and the basic rules to obey as well as mistakes which should be avoided have also been summarized. The fifth chapter focuses on the strategies of dealing with traffic congestion in Tianjin. Three major comprehensive measures are addressed, they are the prior development of public transportation, the improvement of traffic management and the change of people’s way of travel. All these measures firmly join the foreign experience with the situation in Tianjin.
