Traffic congestion is a product of the automobile society.With the continuous development of industrialization and urbanization,many large cities in the world are affected by traffic congestion of different degrees.Traffic congestion leads to serious waste of time and energy,which has a serious impact on urban social and economic development.As one of the first tier cities in China and the central city of South China,Guangzhou has been paying close attention to the problem of urban traffic congestion in recent years.In the face of urban traffic congestion,on the basis of combing the related research,based on the real-time traffic index published in Guangzhou in recent years,this paper analyzes the characteristics of traffic congestion in Guangzhou,and analyze the causes of traffic congestion in important areas.It is based on the peak period traffic index of Guangzhou in 2016 11-12 month.According to the central index value,analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of traffic jam in the peak congestion area.Through the establishment of the traffic pattern clustering optimization model,analyzed the traffic congestion characteristics of 108 driving directions of 59 important passways in Guangzhou.Based on the internal relationship between the central index value of the areas and the value of the channel weight,divided the types of traffic congestion of the road network.The traffic congestion causes of the important district are analyzed from the perspevtive of the road network,the bus system and the real time vehicle flow.The results show that:(1)The time-varying characteristics of traffic index of morning peak and evening peak of Guangzhou show as follows: increase-increase-decrease mode.The peak value of the morning peak and evening peak appeared in the third period:8:00-8:30,18:00-18:30.The highest peak appear at 18:00-18:30,formed east to west "severe congestion belt" of "Liuhua – CheBei YuanCun”.There are two major congested areas of Liuhua and TianHe Business District in the center area.The peripheral areas of the downtown area:LiuHua,ZengCha TongDeWei,BaiYun New Town,XiaoBei LuHu,FangCun and NanZhou showing traffic congestion characteristics of "early open and late plugging".DaShaDi,PaZhou and Higher Education Mega Center are not congested during the 8 peak periods.They are the only 3 non congested areas in the 21 districts of the downtown area of Guangzhou.(2)Guangzhou's important thoroughfares shows a heart shaped traffic congestion model in the early peak.In the mode of heart thoroughfares traffic congestion state can be divided into six kinds of traffic patterns and a total of three kinds of geometric patterns which are backward type,symmetric type and incremental type.The traffic congestion thoroughfares is widely distributed in the late peak hours,and the main road traffic in the inter regional main road and Tianhe Business District are more serious,while those thoroughfares in the traffic congestion state can be divided into nine traffic modes,which makes total four geometric types,including forward type,lagging type,gentle type and symmetrical type.(3)The congested areas during the early peak of Guangzhou mainly manifested in road network congestion and branch congestion,while the late peak is mainly manifested in road network congestion and arterial road congestion.During the peak period,there are a long period of road network congestion zone: ZengCha TongDeWei,LiuHua,ZhouMen XiGuan,HaiZhu Square,DongShan,ZhuJiang New Town,TianHe Business District and CheBei YuanCun.TianHe Business District,ZhuJiang New Town and LiuHua are the most prominent congestion areas of Guangzhou.(4)The TianHe Business District is characterized by inadequate overall road network density,road gradation is relatively reasonable,uneven distribution of public transport services,and high repetition coefficient of public transit lines.On these basis,the overload of theoretical real time traffic volume caused by high private travel rate caused the traffic congestion.ZhuJiang New Town is characterized by inadequate road network density caused by inadequate branch roads,uneven distribution of bus services and insufficient public transport capacity.On these basis,the overload of theoretical real time traffic volume caused by high private travel rate caused the traffic congestion.During the peak period,the theoretical real-time traffic overload is the fundamental cause of traffic congestion in important areas.The delay effect of traffic signal lights is an important reason for traffic congestion,and the high private travel rate has a profound influence on traffic congestion.
