As a kind of effective management techniques and organizational forms, projectmanagement has been widely used, the number of enterprise that operates in a projectway is increasing, and gradually multi-project management has become thedevelopment trend, replacing single project management. In order to get the projectwork breakdown structure (WBS) and respond to customer’s demand quickly, we referto the idea of generic bill of material in mass custimization and propose the concept ofgeneral work breakdown structure (GWBS). We can quickly get the specific projectWBS to meet the demand of customers through the configuration of the GWBS. Thispaper puts forward the methods of constructing GWBS model and its configuration,and it extends the research scope of existing theory and has the certain reference valueto the project type enterprise in their actual operation.Based on K-medoids clustering, construction process of general work breakdownstructure is proposed in this paper. First, the project work breakdown structures arerepresented by a unified knowledge representation, and the similarity measurementbetween two similar WBS are presented based on the minimum weighted symmetricdifference, all the results of similarity measurement are clustered based on theK-medoids clustering method. Then we can unify the WBS instances of each cluster toa GWBS, and illustrate the structure and element of the GWBS, now theconstruction of GWBS is finished.After the GWBS is built, we make the project configuration based on rules. First,we need to determine the configuration variables, and then confirm the configurationrules. After the solving of the configuration design process, we obtain the specificWBS to meet the customer’s needs.Finally, we do simulation experiments on the K-medoids clustering and theproject configuration process with the language C and C#. In the experiments, theclustering of the WBS instances is finished, and the rule-based project configuration inthe basis of the GWBS is realized. It validates the feasibility and effectiveness of theproposed methods: GWBS construction and rule-based project configuration. Thisarticle has studied the construction and configuration of the GWBS from two aspectsof theory and practice, and it is a beneficial supplement to the knowledge of theGWBS.
