On a basis of reviewing energy production and consumption of Jiangsu, the paper assessed and analyzed the GHG emissions in Jiangsu, and used LMDI model to analyse the relationship between economic development and coarbon dioxide emissions.Firstly, the paper reviewed the influences on politics and economics brought by climate change, and briefly introduced the action that countries around the world had taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. China’s greenhouse gas emissions were introduced as well.Secondly, the paper described the production and consumption of energy in Jiangsu, pointing out the contradiction between production and consumption of energy. By calculating the energy consumption from output value, this paper found that energy consumption from output value decrease. Then, the paper selected and consulted the methods of GHG emission assessment and scenario analysis offered by IPCC, IEA and other research organizations and scholars, and calculated greenhouse gas emissions from energy consumption, industrial process and agricultural production process. After analysis, following results were found:from1997to2008, greenhouse gas emissions in Jiangsu increased year by year. In2008, the total GHG gas emission in Jiangsu province was660.7049Mt CO2-eq, among which the emissions from energy consumption, industrial process, and agricultural production process were527.1498Mt CO2-eq,12194.77Mt CO2-eq and11.6074Mt CO2-eq, respectively. By the vertically and horizontally comparative analysis of the GHG emissions in Jiangsu province, it was found that the GHG emissions of Jiangsu province had following characteristics:1) energy consumption was the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and coal consumption made great contributions to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for77.59%of GHG emissions form energy consumption.2) industrial sector in Jiangsu is the largest sector of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly due to the industrial sector’s energy consumption structure dominated by coal. 3) Carbon dioxide from industrial process increased year by year, while GHG gas emission from agricultural production process decreased.4) Carbon dioxide from thermal energy consumption increased while thermal efficiency improved.5) Industry is the largest sector of energy consumption and is also the largest sector of GHG emissions. In2008, carbon dioxide from industry sector in Jiangsu province was458.41145Mt. GHG emissions from Suzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi and Xuzhou stood one to four, accounting for69.36%total provincial emissions.Thirdly, With the use of LMDI model to find what factors affect GHG emissions in Jiangsu, following results were obtained. Economic development was the main reason for GHG emissions increase and the energy intensity effect was an important tool to reduce GHG emissions. Population effects and energy consumption structure effects on carbon dioxide in Jiangsu was not obvious.Finally, according to the conclusions, the paper proposed measures to reduce GHG emissions.
