The smart grid can effectively improve the power supply reliability and powerquality,and is also the development direction of world network in the earlytwenty-first century. The distribution network is a link of power system orientingthe users and the intelligent power distribution network is an important part ofsmart grid. However the communication protocol widely used in currentdistribution network has some bottlenecks which restrict the development ofintelligent distribution network, such as, the meaning of protocol data is ambiguous,the link between data is little and interoperability between terminals is non-existent.Rapid and efficient communication is a necessary condition for the construction ofsmart grid. In order to realize the interoperability between intelligent electronicdevices produced from different equipment manufacturers in substation automationsystem, IEC established the IEC61850standard.Now although the61850standard has been used in distribution automationsystem, its application is still in initial stage and the related products are not richenough. This paper is research on the application of IEC61850standard ondistribution automation system case study of FTU feeder terminal unit. The maincontribution of the paper is as followsFirstly, the paper studies the application of the IEC61850standard in feederautomation system with in-depth analysis of the standard and its modelingapproaches. The61850standard use one-to-many communication method and canbe applied to Ethernet-based distribution network, particularly in smart distributedfeeder automation system. The paper also analyzes the communication function inthe distribution automation system,draws a conclusion that most of the logic nodein IEC61850can be directly applied to the distribution network, increases logicalnodes related to new energy, and creates logical nodes for the location of fault,isolation of fault and fault restoration. This paper even use SCL to describe asimple feeder and complete the simulation of fault location method based on thecharacteristic frequency of transient energy relative entropy of S transform.Secondly, the paper analyses how to embed the working principle and functiondemand of the feeder terminal to unit FTU, does the functional decomposition in new FTU, and designs the FTU to4logical devices which are testing functionprotective function distributed feeder automation function and power module. TheFTU prototype is created based on DSP processor and W5100network chip and thedevelopment environment is CCS.Finally, the paper focuses on the Generic Object Oriented Substation Event(GOOSE), introduces the ASN.1encoding used by IEC61850standard, encodes toGOOSE message on BER, and presents the design and implementation details ofGOOSE communication from the main characteristics of GOOSE message likereal-time, reliability and so on in which the designing principle and function ofimportance function in code design is highlighted based on DSP processor andW5100network chip platform. At last the GOOSE message test platform is set upwith relay tester, switches, and other device, Obtained by simulating short theremote signaling modification, FTU bursts GOOSE messages, test results show thatthe design on the FTU GOOSE messages meet the requirements and achieve thedesired objectives.
