With the development of Manufacturing, the stepping mechanism can greatly meet the production engineering’s need and be applied to kinds of automation equipments widely as its output component can make unidirectional movement with periodical stops and accomplish a series of motions, such as processing, trans-situation, scale division, feeding, changing-over, etc. Comparing with other kinds of stepping mechanism, the cylindrical indexing cam mechanism has many advantages, including compact structure, higher positioning accuracy, the maximum number of divisions achieved, excellent dynamics in high speed and reliable performance, and has been applied to many fields like the Light industry, Electronics and Mechanics extensively.Study in the cylindrical indexing cam mechanism in some countries like USA, Japan, Canada and England has experienced a developing process from empirical design to optimal design, from simply kinematic analysis to kinetic studies and from manual processing to CAM. We do an in-depth study for characteristics of cylindrical indexing cam mechanism, including its exact solution and law of motion, Dynamic characteristics, new-style cam machining equipment, standardization, analytic methods, system development of the CAD/CAM, design of high speed cam, etc.With the relatively late start, in recent years our country mainly did some research about the cylindrical indexing cam mechanism on its design, law of motion, profile curve, modeling process, NC machining process and CAD/CAM system and error analysis, and many research findings had been achieved. However, by comparison with developed countries, study and application in cylindrical indexing cam mechanism in our country are still far.This paper takes the cylindrical indexing cam mechanism as the research object, and do research and development of cylindrical indexing cam mechanism CAD systems with theory and methods of the conjugate surface theory, the envelope method theory, the equidistant surface theory, parametric design, secondary development technology. The main contents are as follows:1) Calculate the motion and structural parameters of cylindrical indexing cam mechanism; compare and make a choice of motion law that applied to cylindrical indexing cam mechanism; to solve and compare the equations of cylindrical indexing cam profile respectively with conjugate surface method, the envelope method and isometric surface method.2) To complete the design of cylindrical indexing cam mechanism with Visual C++development parameters and dimension design subsystem and to get the movement and structural parameters it.3) Based on3D modeling software Pro/E to make secondary development with the use of Visual C++and Pro/TOOLKIT, so as to form a three-dimensional solid modeling subsystem. Make parametric design of cylindrical indexing cam mechanism and get its three-dimensional solid model.4) To make secondary development of finite element analysis software ANSYS with Visual C++and integrate it into the CAD system as the finite element analysis subsystem to complete the analysis of mechanism.
