With the rapid economic development, the accelerating the urbanization process and the unceasing enhancement of people’s living level, our country’s urban residential area rapidly grow, and will present sustainable growth trend in a relatively long time. However, residential buildings of Chinese traditional structure forms, lead to a large number of resources and energy consumption and massive discharge of pollutant, and cause serious destruction and impact to the environment. Along with the boost of the sustainable development strategy in our country, construction industry needs to change the development way of high resources and energy consumption, high pollution emissions and low recycling for a long time, and walk the road of sustainable development, this is the way out of the development way of the construction industry.The steel structure residence, because of its environmental impact is little, is known as green building, also got some support and promotion in its development of our country. In order to explore whether the steel structure residence accord with the requirement of sustainable development, need to further evaluate its environmental and economic performance, carries on the comprehensive evaluation. This paper adopts two research theory:the life cycle assessment and the life cycle cost, establishes environmental and economic comprehensive evaluation system of the residential construction, and applies to the empirical analysis of the steel structure residence, evaluates and analyzes from environmental performance, economic performance and synthesis, suggests that the steel structure residence conforms to the requirement of sustainable development in our country, provides theoretical basis to guide the government for the application and popularization of the steel structure residence, contributes to the sustainable development of the construction industry at the same time.First, analyze the evaluation research status of the steel structure residential environment and economy by Chinese scholars, point out the problems existing in the research, and identify the necessity of comprehensive evaluation research for the steel structure residential environmental and economic performance.Second, elaborate the characteristics of the steel structure residence and its development situation at home and abroad, and introduce and analyze the evaluation content, the evaluation standard, the evaluation method, etc of the existing building evaluation system at home and abroad, preliminarily explore out that needing to establish a quantitative evaluation system which can evaluate building environmental performance, at the same time also can consider building economic performance, and is suitable for the residential housing.Third, utilize the theory of the life cycle assessment and the life cycle cost, respectively build the residential housing environmental and economic performance evaluation model, and synthesize them on the premise of maintaining consistent, determine environmental and economic comprehensive evaluation system of the residential housing, provide evaluation standard and methods for the structure type selection and design scheme comparison.Finally, apply established environmental and economic comprehensive evaluation system of the residential housing to the empirical analysis of the steel structure residence. Through contrastive analysis of the steel structure residence and the reinforced concrete structure residence, verify the established model and evaluation method from environmental performance, economic performance and comprehensive performance, preliminarily prove that the steel structure residence has more superior environmental and economic performance, verify the feasibility of this research achievement.Preliminary verification result shows that the steel structure residence has obvious environmental performance, economic performance and comprehensive performance compared with the reinforced concrete structure residence on even ground. In urban development process, roundly popularizing steel structure residence has important strategic significance for improving the residential comprehensive performance, ameliorating the urban and rural environment, promoting the sustainable development of Chinese housing industry.
