As the automobile industry develops and people’s living standards improve, thevehicle inventory continues to grow. Meanwhile, traffic congestion and trafficaccidents occur frequently. To alleviate such traffic problems, the operating featuresof traffic flow become a hotspot for researches. The car-following model is the mostbasic theory on traffic flow and a lot of relevant researches have been done. Besides,the car following under icy and snowy conditions is significantly different from thatin normal circumstances. Also, traffic problems there are more severe. Accordingly,the car-following model under such circumstances becomes a key point to be studied.The thesis makes a systematic research on the following items: the features of thetraffic flow of urban arterial road under icy and snowy conditions, car-followingstatus, establishment and calibration of car-following model and traffic simulation.Firstly, the thesis studies the features of the traffic flow under icy and snowyconditions both at home and abroad and the car-following model. On this basis, thestrengths and weaknesses of existing findings of researches are summarized todetermine the direction of research on establishing the car-following model undericy and snowy conditions. Investigations are made on the traffic flow of urbanarterial road both under circumstances of ice and snow and under normalcircumstances. Therefore, the influencing factors of the car-following status underdifferent circumstances are specified. Besides, Drivers’ psychological factors andsafe distance between vehicles are considered to divide the car-following status.Then, the car-following model under icy and snowy conditions is established. Next,the characteristics of the individual driver and vehicle are analyzed to modify thecar-following model. Secondly, according to traffic flow data obtained from theinvestigation and drivers’ information, the thesis specifies the speed and accelerationon ice and snow conditions to quantize the car-following model under such icy andsnowy conditions. Thirdly, traffic simulation of car-following is made according tothe established car-following model and survey data. Simulation program is madevia C#language to simulate vehicles’ driving state under ice and snow. Then, thedetector is set to detect the operating parameters of the traffic flow. Next, theparameters are compared to the actual investigation data on traffic flow to verify thefeasibility of the car-following model under icy and snowy conditions established inthis thesis.The researches on the car-following models of urban arterial roads under icyand snowy conditions can enrich the theories on car-following models under specialweather. Besides, it provides a strong support to further researches on safe drivingunder icy and snowy conditions. Meanwhile, it is of practical value to the traffic control department to manage and organize transportation under icy and snowyconditions.
