Recently, the aseismic performance and safety of super high-rise buildings haveincreasingly attracted our attentions. Designing reasonablely an energy dissipation deviceto achieve a predictable performance and not to impact the function as well has become aresearch topic home and broad. It is effective for tuned mass dampers to reduce thestructural vibration by earthquake and wind excitations. The engineering applicationand theory research on tuned mass dampers has been improved rapidely. In order toincrease the effectiveness of TMD to reduce dynamic response of main structure, investigators mainly focused on how to widen the tuning frequency range and use withother technologies in combination, Etc. In order to consider the detailed problems andfacilitate the applications of the mass dampers, the mass damper theory and applicationhave been studied which support the mass damper design, the main contents arefollowing:(1)Considering the earthquake excitations and based on the relative energyformulas, the elastic energy balance and transfer mechanism of TMD system has beenanalyzed, using transferring energy and additional damper to explain the workingmechanism of TMD. Considering the intensity of ground motion and spectralcharacteristics, the influence of structural dynamic characteristics on the accumulatedenergy and instantaneous energy are studied, and then it further analyzes the influence ofTMD’s parameters on main structural energy response.(2)The elastoplastic response of TMD are analyzed by using Bouc-Wen non-linearmodel. Thus the features of elastoplastic response for TMD on accumulated energy andinstantaneous energy are studied.(3)The traditional elastoplastic peak response evaluation can not be accuratelyreflects the TMD control effect. In this paper, taking advantage of equivalent single degreeof freedom theory, the multi-degree of freedom system is actually simplified intoequivalent single degree of freedom system. And based on this method, successful designESDOF-TMD system, then inelastic damage of main structure based on Park&Angdamage model is researched.(4)Single evaluation index of energy peak response does not reflect the responsecharacteristics of the main structure under different ground motion. So, characteristics ofearthquake, dynamic behaviour of structure and yield characteristics of the material, areconsidered respectively. Finally, main conclusions are summarized and some topics for future research arepresented.
