| Xiang’nan located in the southern part of Hunan, which is in the junction of threeprovinces of Hunan, Jiangxi and Guangdong. Since ancient times, Xiang’nan is amulti-cultural region, which gave birth to the regional towns morphology and vernacularculture of architecture. The old town and the street and buildings of JiaHe County inChenzhou City is one of the example. Modern substantial reform of the social system, thedevelopment of the commodity economy, as well as the introduction of Western architecturalculture have contributed to the evolution of the urban residential areas in Jiahe County, andthus some interesting building type appered which deserve profound reasearch. However, dueto the imbalance in the geographical distribution of the houses around the cultural studies, theancient town of Jiahe County and their houses have not attracted enough attention ofresearchers. My research will break this situation. This paper is divided into seven chapters, the first chapter describes the Jiahe town and itsresidential areas as research object, reason, purpose and meaning, and discusses the historyand current status of the traditional houses and its modern evolution. The second chapterdescribes the the historical and cultural environment as well as the natural and geographicalenvironment of Jiahe town and Xiang’nan geographic location. The part of Chapter3to Chapter5is the most important section of the thesis. The subject ofthis paper is divided into three parts. The first part take a macro perspective study. The maincontents include the spatial pattern of the ancient city and its reasons for the formation of thelayout. Business and the river systyem are two main factors impact on the layout of the street. The street space, street form, street scale, node of space have been researched deeply too. Thesecond part is about the study of the ancent buildings of Chengguan town of JiaHe County.Traditional pattern:“One Light and Two dark†and the townhouses pattern are two mainspace mode of Residential buildings. The buildings which were built on this two mode andtheir structure, structure practice, decorative arts have been studied in the two parts. The focusof the third part is in the evolution of the modern history of Jiahe town houses. Mainexploration are made from the surface to the inner layer and from space to the facade of thebuildings. The Western practices of tradional Chinese building were mainly affected by the"Baroque" and "gallery type". After a series of comparisons, I found that the Western stylebuilding houses still used the tradional mothod to orgnaize the spaces. And the mordernresdidents of multiple types which emerged in the Jiahe old town have been evaluated withthe point of view of the development of modern architectural history. In the Chpater6, I tried to proposed some opinion and suggestions to the protection of pattern of old town and the vernacular dwellings. Aad conclusions are drawed in the lastchapter. |
