Abstract/Summary:
More than fifty years, Hong Kong is one of the highest density populated area in the world. Hong Kong has solved its housing problem successfully by carrying out a series of public housing programs in a long time. Its remarkable achievement has earned itself worldwide acclaim. This paper is mainly on the research of external space of public housing in Hong Kong. By the introduction of the departments, policies, and living conditions of Hong Kong s public housing, the paper firstly summarized the four stages of development of Hong Kong s public housing and their general characteristics. The paper then establishes a research system including spatial form, transportation planning and facility configuration for the analysis of external space of public housing. Finally, the paper summarizes the evolution and characteristics of public housing in Hong Kong and points out its inspiration for affordable housing in Mainland. In the research system of external space, spatial form is to extract the prototype of the building and external space of public housing, and compare the physical features of the buildings, the combination of the groups, and the spatial composition of the whole estates in different period of development. It also summarizes different layout strategies according to different topographic of the housing estates. Transportation system focuses on urban level and estate level. Combined with the public transportation and new town development, the urban level reveals that public housing has a close contact with the city by public transportation. By subdivided into vehicle design and pedestrian design, the estate level is to compare and comb the characteristics and developments of road system, parking system, pedestrian system and its space. Facility configuration summarized the development by analyzing the types and properties of the facilities in public housing, and it also sums up the principle of combination between individual facilities and the overall layout of the facilities.
