With the development of economic and social and the acceleration of city construction, the traffic problems have become a critical issue of common concern. In order to manage thetraffic information, many cities have established a variety of transportation managementsubsystems. Nevertheless, since different transportation management subsystems may havedifferent management systems, technical standards, these subsystems cannot effectively sharetheir information, which results in the problem of ‘islands of information’. The trafficinformation sharing and exchange platform, through the effective integration oftransportation management subsystems, achieves real-time, accurate, and efficienttransportation management and control. Thus, it is the best way to effectively solve the trafficproblems on the ground and the direction of development. The wireless sensor network technologies in the field of traffic information monitoring, have a high detection precision, a strong anti-interference ability, and easy installation andmaintenance. The main contents of this article is to establish a traffic information sharingplatform, by using sensor nodes to collect real-time traffic information, and Server softwareto achieve wireless data transfer. The traffic information is mined, exchanged, and shared onthe platform. The main work of this paper includes:(1) This paper firstly details the research status of the wireless sensor networks anddomestic and international traffic information sharing platform. The disadvantages of currenttraffic information sharing platforms are explored, and the advantages of the sensor-basedtraffic information collection are also analyzed. Motivated by these, this paper uses sensornodes to detect traffic data and FME Server to transmit data, based on which the trafficinformation sharing platform is established.(2) The key technologies of the information sharing and exchange platform are explored, including the XML technology, the Arduino Ethernet for wireless sensor networkexploitation, and the FME Server for real-time information sharing, transmission, receipt, andexchange. Specifically, the FME Server is used for the active, passive, full, and progressiveupdates of data. The platform also provides the projection coordinate conversion service, such as uses can upload data based on projection coordinate conversion service.(3) This paper then analyses the user demands and the functional requirements of thetraffic information sharing platform. The Structural of the traffic information sharingplatform is proposed. The logical framework and structure of the platform are detailed andanalyzed. Particular technologies are proposed, in order to achieve specific functions of theplatform, such as real-time data acquisition and delivery, information sharing exchange, andtraffic information. The overall architecture of the platform, such as the overall structure, logical structure, platform subsystems, and platform database, are also designed.(4) Lately, this paper proposes a vehicle classification system based on the integration oftraffic information. The microwave detector and the loop coil sensor are sued to detectvehicle information, including the height of the vehicle head, the height of the vehicle tail, the height of the vehicle top, and the length of the vehicle. The PSO algorithm is used tooptimize the transfer matrix of the BP neural network. The vehicles are then classified based on the characteristic value of the vehicle and BP neural network. The experimental resultsshow that, the information fusion vehicle classification system has a higher classificationaccuracy and more stable performance, compared with vehicle classification algorithmsbased on single sensor and vehicle classification algorithms based on the BP neural networkclassification algorithm without any improvements.
