A Translation Project Report On Movie Dialogue Translation

Economic globalization acclerate the cultural communication between countries, and movie exchanges play a more and more important role in the field of international cultural exchange. With the deepening of China’s opening policy and an increase in the number of imported movies, demand and the market of movie dialogue translation is also growing.There are two main kinds of Movie Dialogue Translation (MDT), dubbed movie (dubbing) and subtitle translation. Dubbed movies are mainly dubbed by famous film dubbing studio in China, while subtitles mainly derives from the subtitle translation groups from internet. But there are few theories that can guide MDT or translation methods related. MDT is an important part of audiovisual translation; both dubbing translation and subtitle translation have the feature of colloquialism and instantaneity. They also have their own different characteristics at the same time, as a result, they have different translation standard.This thesis is a report on translation practice, aiming at summarizing applicable methods for MDT through translation practice, thus to provide materials for related theory. The translation studied here are subtitles of the following three movies,"The Professional","Mr.&Mrs. Smith" and "G-Force".This thesis is composing of four chapters, trys to sum up the suitable translation methods by analyzing example of dubbing and subtitling translation, their characteristics and difficulities. The first chapter introduces the domestic movie dialogue translation research status, movie plot and the original language features of the three exemplified movies. The second chapter presents the characteristics of subtitling and dubbing translation and matters need attention. In principle, dubbing and subtitling translation of the same original text should be the same, but they both have their own characteristics. The main characteristics of subbing translation are audiobility and non-illustrative; while the main characterized of subtitle translation are invisibility, illustrative and synchronicity. The third chapter is the analysis. In this part, taking subtitling and dubbing translation of the three movies as example, combined with the characteristics and the matters needing attention mentioned in the second chapter, the author summarizes some applicable translation methods and situations of MDT. Three methods are "note-adding and summary","the naturalization translation" and "sentence structure adjustment", while three kinds of situations are "homophone translation","dysphemism translation" and "difference between subtitling and dubbing translation". The fourth chapter is the conclusion part, not only summarizes the main difficulties in subtitles translation, but also pointing out how to solve difficulties to get high quality translation under the principle of "fully understand, flexible express".
