Translation promotes the cultural exchanges of the world and the progress ofthe society. With the rapid development of modernization, applied translation hasbecome the mainstream of translation. This kind of scientific English requires thatthe language be accurate, rigorous and objective. And the quality of this kind oftranslation often exerts a direct influence on their job.The present report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the railwaytrack training materials. In view of the length (10,000English words) and the timelimit (6days), a small team was set up to perform this task.In order to complete the project efficiently and with the time limit, the authorhad an all round preparation before translating the materials. First of all, the authoranalyzed the function, aim and the language of the translation, and then arrangedpersons for the translation according to the characteristics of small-scale project andthe process of the translation to make sure that the project could work smoothly. Inthe process of translation, we used functional translation theory as the guidance,made detailed analysis of special terms and complicated sentences, and appliedtransformational skills to deal with difficult places in the translation. The translatorsoften communicated with each other and had discussions to solve difficulties wemet.As the report reveals, for a professional translator or a person who translatesmaterials of English for specific purposes, it is necessary first of all to skillfully masterand use the two languages involved and the professional knowledge concerned. Inthe process of translation, we should pay great attention to every link or step in theimplementation of the project. What is more, we should abide by the professionalethics and try every means to satisfy the need of the customer. In order to do so, it isnecessary to find a balance between the faithful expression of the meaning of theoriginal version, the demand of the customer, and the response of the reader of thetranslated version. It is hoped that the report can provide some help for thetranslators in dealing with the rail-track documents and in the operation of small-scale project of translation.
