Firstly,this article makes a comparison of pictophonetic characters and Englishwords on internal structure, and draw the similarities between them, that is, being similarto English roots,meaning elements of phonetic word bear the main meaning of the word,many meaning elements of pictophonetic characters can be found the English roots in thesame meaning accordingly. From this angle, the author explores a new method ofteaching Chinese characters to foreigners-----to find the same meaning of the meaningelements of Chinese pictophonetic characters and the English roots. Then the articleexpounds the reasons of using this teaching method to senior students whose mothertongue are English.This method can help students establish a motivation of Chinesecharacters recognition,enhance their interests and find a high-performance scientificmethod to remember characters,at the same time,realizes a scientific reorganization ofteaching contents. This article also claims establish separate course of Chinese charactersin addition to intensive reading class,and use this teaching method in special course ofChinese characters.It also explains this teaching method according to a specific teachingcase,setting the short-term training senior level students as teaching object,and specificpictophonetic characters in the material as teaching contents. On the basis of these, theteaching case sets up a basis for determining the pictophonetic characters in teachingactivities. Then, the pictophonetic characters are divided into different grades as the basisof the syllabus, and the teacher will decide the teaching sequence of these pictophoneticcharacters according to the level and the frequency of occurrence.At last,teach thereorganization Chinese words and the extended words to students. In the end,this paperevaluates the significance and limitations of this teaching method, finding it can enhancestudents’ ability of predicting the meaning of Chinese characters,guide students toformate the inductive learning strategy and help students to distinguish similar words. Inaddition, this paper also puts forward the disadvantages of the teaching mothed,whichneed to be improved in the future teaching.
