Chinese characters are the biggest obstacle for foreign students to leaner Chinese. The teaching of Chinese characters is the difficult point and the weak point in teaching foreigners Chinese. In order to solve the difficulty, it need strengthen the research on teaching foreigners Chinese characters since the past researches are not enough. From 1980s, it has been a hot issue to study how to improve foreign students' efficiency of learning Chinese characters and then to promote the level of teaching of Chinese to foreigners.The author has been engaged in the research on Chinese characters teaching for a long time and made some exploration on traditional Chinese characters teaching. During the study for Master's degree, the author has learned some theories and knowledge about teaching of Chinese to foreigners and found although teaching foreigners Chinese is different from traditional Chinese characters teaching, they are interlinked. Therefore the author tries to research some similarities and differences between them as well as the application of theories and methods of traditional Chinese characters teaching to teaching foreigners Chinese characters in order to provide some thinking and concrete programs for teaching foreigners Chinese, especially teaching foreigners Chinese characters.The thesis includes four chapters. Chapter One generalizes the development of teaching foreigners Chinese and teaching foreigners Chinese characters and briefly introduces the achievements and insufficiency in teaching foreigners Chinese characters. Chapter Two explains the necessity of strengthening teaching of Chinese characters in terms of the characteristics of Chinese characters and the difficulties existing in foreign students' learning Chinese characters. Chapter Three first concludes the theories and methods of traditional Chinese characters teaching. Based on this, several teaching methods are emphatically introduced, which are widely applied, popular for a long time and can fully represent the characteristics of traditional Chinese characters teaching. Then the feasibility that the methods of traditional Chinese characters teaching are applied to teaching foreigners Chinese characters is expounded in terms of their common ground, which provides the theoretical base for the experiment research. Chapter Four introduces the objectives, process, methods, results and conclusions of the experiment on applying traditional Chinese characters teaching to teaching foreigners Chinese characters. Concrete examples are used to illustrate the feasibility.The originality of this thesis is the experiment research that applies methods of traditional Chinese characters teaching accumulating for thousands of years to teaching of Chinese characters to foreigners and the active exploration of the improvement of the efficiency of teaching of Chinese characters to foreigners. This research does not limit on the level of theories, but expounds through the concrete experiment. What is more, the process of the experiment is full, accurate and concrete; therefore it has a certain operation and reference.
