Chinese pre-attributives are a big stumbling stone for simultaneous interpreters in their practice. To bring some light on this problem, the author has carried out an observational study for tackling tactics used to handle pre-attributives in C-E simultaneous interpreting with a view to facilitating the interpreting process and reduce the short-term memory load on the part of interpreters.At the beginning of the thesis, a brief introduction of simultaneous interpreting and an overview of attributives are made. Gile’s Effort Model and source-language-oriented principle are illustrated and adopted as the basis of the theoretical framework. Next, the author carries out an observational study into the chosen materials to find out mostly frequently used or most effective techniques employed in the process of simultaneous interpreting.The adoption of the following tactics:omission, paraphrasing, prepositional structure, non-verb forms, sentence or clause, and linear interpreting will greatly reduce interpreters’ burden of short-term memory and facilitate the smooth proceeding of simultaneous interpreting.This thesis is a tentative study of techniques dealing with pre-attributives in C-E simultaneous interpreting. It is expected that the findings could shed some light on simultaneous teaching and practice.
