As the demand for qualified simultaneous interpreters increases, an increasing number of English learners are now trying to set a foot into this market. However, after some professional training and practices, some interpreters have realized that without the use of some effective strategies, a successful SI practice can hardly be attained, and that though with a text, simultaneous interpreting with text is never an easy job as it is assumed.By far, many scholars have set an eye in the field of strategies for SI, but those studies are usually an overall discussion of several commonly used strategies for SI and seldom do the studies exclusively focus on only one strategy, let alone exclusive studies concentrated on a particular strategy of its application in English-to-Chinese SI with text. This thesis has taken the form of a report for the writer’s first-time SI practice. In this thesis, the writer puts forward some ideas of the application of syntactic linearity drawn from her practice by first reviewing the process of this practice, the strategies employed and the problems encountered. Here, the application of syntactic linearity is summarized into three steps, that is segmentating, interpreting with the flow and particle fulfilling. Then, while the methods for segmentating can be classified as by words and by the slowdown or pause of the speaker, there are three ways to fulfill particles:repetition, word-adding and transforming. Furthermore, the difficulty-adding situations tend to be encountered by interpreters in the application of syntactic linearity in E-C SI with text and the problems commonly seen in the interpreting produced in this case have been summarized with causes analyzed and solutions provided, all based on the writer’s practice. With all those analysis, this report is hoped to shed some light on the future study of SI and the training of SI learners.
