In simultaneous interpretation with text from English to Chinese, the original speech is usually written before hand, and is thus often in formal language with many long and complex sentences compared with impromptu speeches. This requires interpreters to adopt syntactic linearity strategies when necessary by dividing sentences into chunks and outputting information chunks in a timely manner, which can largely reduce the burden on interpreters' memory and improve the quality of interpretation. This thesis is a case study on the author's simultaneous interpreting practice of the Annual High-Level Panel Discussion on Human Rights Mainstreaming. The author first discusses from several perspectives why it is important and plausible to adopt syntactic linearity strategies in simultaneous interpretation with text from English to Chinese. Then,by analyzing the misuses and proper uses of such strategies in this practice mainly from three perspectives: the “Salami” technique, addition, and conversion of parts of speech, this thesis aims to study how interpreters can make better use of syntactic linearity strategies in simultaneous interpretation with text from English to Chinese to reduce memory load and save efforts for listening, comprehending, and improving the fluency, accuracy, and completeness of output.
