According to the College English Curriculum Requirements established by the Ministry of Education in2007, college English teaching should aim at cultivating students’comprehensive ability of using the language. In such an information age, like other things in the society, language keeps on developing and evolving, so does English. So how to catch up with the developing steps of English, and how to integrate various English teaching materials to cultivate students’English comprehensive ability in limited class periods, are becoming the issues for English educators to study.Though many teaching reforms have been done, we still need to find some new blood for college English teaching. Since English newspapers and magazines appeared in college English classes, English educators gradually begin to approve the promoting effects of English news in college English class. They have done many researches on this issue theoretically and achieved a lot. But some practical researches on how to use English news in college English class are still less in modern studies. So this thesis aims at doing practical research in introducing English news into college English class, further proving the feasibility, practicality and validity.Based on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis, Affective Filter Hypothesis, Constructivism and Situated Instruction, this thesis does an empirical research of introducing English news into college English classroom teaching. Starting with the concrete classroom teaching, the researcher selects appropriate English news materials to conduct an experiment for one experimental semester in Class10B6of Heilongjiang Bayi Agricultural University, which contains68students. The experiment is to using English news in visual, audio or written forms to assist college English classroom teaching. Meanwhile, the researcher chooses Class10B2as the control class, which contains70students who are taught by the original teaching methods in the experimental semester. At the beginning of the experiment, the researcher collects the two class students’various data such as the attendance rate, oral performance, final grade, etc. of the former semester. After the experimental semester with fifteen weeks of teaching, the college English final examination paper of Heilongjiang Bayi Agricultural University is used as the testing tool for the total138students who also have the oral tests. The results are compared with those of the former semester, and analyzed by SPSS19.0to gain the data such as variance, frequency, etc. The results show that, the rangeability of all the experimental data of Class B6is more obvious than those of Class B2. This can be concluded that it is effective to introduce English news into classroom teaching to promote college English teaching and to improve students’English comprehensive abilities.Proceeding with the concrete classroom teaching, this thesis proves English news as the teaching materials play a positive role in the process of college English classroom teaching, concludes the enlightenments to college English teaching, puts forward the specific methods and notes when using English news in classroom teaching, and sums up the specific requirements for teachers and students set by this teaching method.
