Being the representatives of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou", Jin Nong and Zheng Xie both made their poetry, calligraphy, and painting combined perfectly and bring art of calligraphic inscriptions on painting to the maximum. Jin Nong’s poetry is simple and subtle, his calligraphy work is vigorously straightforward and honest, his painting is filled with ancient simplicity, Zheng Xie’s poetry is calm and pristine, his calligraphy work is of simplicity yet firm and erect while his painting is with booming enthusiasm. They each found a way to unify the three (poetry, calligraphy, and painting) together for the expression of their own aesthetic taste. The academic study today on their works is very fruitful. However, there is still a huge lack of study on their calligraphic inscriptions on painting. Jin Nong and Zheng Xie’s calligraphic inscriptions on painting have such aesthetic significance ahead of its time, but the art world today gradually ignore the significance of their calligraphic inscriptions on painting. This article intends to study from the following aspects:Firstly, an overview of the calligraphic inscriptions on painting of Jin Nong and Zheng Xie; Secondly, a brief comparison of their calligraphy and painting such as similarities and differences. Lastly, a comparison mainly focusing on their calligraphic inscriptions on painting works. Therefrom, to summarize the significance of their works is as reference which enabling the painting calligraphy today to draw lessons from.
