On Cross-cultural Approaches And Implications Of Interpreting Classical Chinese Quotations In NPC And CPPCC Press Conferences

Interpretation has established an important status in international communities and Chinais increasingly involved in conferences and in close contact with the internationalcommunity.Classical Chinese poetry and some other forms of Classical Chinese literaryworks are widely and ever-increasingly employed in international exchanges by governmentofficials, especially in press conferences. The press conferences held during the NationalPeople s Congress(NPC) and the Chinese People s Political and ConsultativeConference(CPPCC) draw much attention from the world. At the same time,the uniqueness ofthe language used in Classical Chinese quotations and the difficulty of its oral interpretationimpose an even higher demand for press conference interpretation. This also offers languagelearners with a new area of study. In order to avoid mistakes and well accomplish theinterpreting in NPC and CPPCC press conferences, appropriate approaches shall be found tointerpret classical Chinese quotations. Meanwhile, interpreters should have the internationalvision of cross-cultural communication to overcome language barriers and serve as a bridge ininternational communities. Besides bilingual talents and special skills, press conferenceinterpreters are supposed to raise their cross-cultural awareness in interpreting preparations.This current thesis firstly presents the features and requirements of Classical Chinesequotation interpreting and its current research, introduces cross-cultural awareness and therelationship with oral interpretation and then discusses the general approaches of translatingand interpreting Classical Chinese quotations. Through case study,the author analyzes thespecific approaches of interpreting classical Chinese quotations in NPC and CPPCC PressConference in the perspective of cross-cultural communication. Finally, the author comes tothe conclusion and puts forward some suggestions on how to improve the interpreters cross-cultural awareness.
