The five short stories are selected from Louis L’Amour’s short storiescollection—May There be a Road. L’Amour (1908-1988), born in Jamestown, NorthDakota, was an American author, whose books consisted primarily of Western novels,many of which were made into movies, and he was considered "one of the world’smost popular writers". This report is an analysis of the common problems existing inthe translation process of five short stories extracted from Louis L’Amour’s shortstories collection from the perspective of Newmark’s translation typology and itsstrategies of semantic translation and communicative translation, so as to reflect onthe translation problems in a rational manner, thus trying to make reasonabledescription and explanation of the translation problems. Case study of this reportmainly falls into four levels: rhetorical skills, syntactical skills, dialogue translationand title translation, and each level are explained with several examples. The report isorganized in the following five chapters. Chapter One serves as an introduction to thetranslation project and also a review of the whole translation process; Chapter Two isan introduction to the short stories collection and the author of it; Chapter Three is andetailed introduction to Newmark’s translation typology, the guiding theory of thetranslation project; Chapter Four is the main body of the report, making analysis ofcases from four aspects: rhetorical skills, syntactical skills, dialogue translation andtitle translation; and Chapter Five is the conclusion, which summarizes the gains andfindings in undertaking this translation project, as well as the limitations of theproject.
