This is a project report on the translation of English Speeches at7th Pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Cooperation Forum. The translation materials are a set of parallel documents from several government officials’speeches on the forum and are written in English. After studying the background information, searching the parallel texts and learning the relevant knowledge, the author analyzes the translation materials from the features and functions of the English speeches before starting to translate as guided by the skopos theory. Moreover, some preparations before the translation are made by the author, such as making translation arrangements, selecting translation tools, and searching for the translations of some difficult terms. Then in the process of translation, from the perspective of skopos theory, the author selects some translation methods or techniques such as literal translation, free translation, amplification, omission, conversion and so on and discusses the cases. Meanwhile, the author discusses some translation strategies for some special structures commonly seen in English, such as adverbial clauses, attributive clauses and passive sentences. Last, the author summarizes the experiences gained in the whole translation process. First, the translator should repeatedly read the source text and figure out the content, theme and style of it. Second, the translator should learn the background information of the source text. Third, the author should flexibly select the appropriate translation methods oor techniques with the guidance of the chosen theory. Fourth, the translator should revise and polish the translation to make the target language smooth based on the features of English speeches. By writing this project, the author hopes to provide references and experiences for similar work in the future.
