Difficulties And Coping Strategies Of Conference Interpreting

The presence of interpreting studies has come to a new era. Distinctive categoriesof interpreting have enriched and complemented interpreting studies. Conferenceinterpreting, as a newly-emerged category of interpreting, is unique among otherinterpreting tasks and now attracting scholars to devote endeavors to the research ofthis discipline.The Crisis Management Conference is hosted in November2011and divided intotwo sessions: the keynote speech in the morning and the roundtable discussion in theafternoon. This thesis is a report based on the interpretation of Crisis ManagementWorkshop held in Baiyun Airport. By employing Daniel Gile’s Effort Models, Thisthesis tries to discover the difficulties of conference interpreting as well as feasiblecoping tactics to deal with them. The presence of the first-hand material provided bythe conference and its corresponding analysis offers evidence for conferenceinterpreting studies.The author is served as the interpreter for the whole interpretation task. Theacquirement of experiences is therefore of great value to the author. By analyzingdifferent efforts with Daniel Gile’s Models, the author tries to present the difficultiesin different efforts and provide feasible coping tactics from the author’s perspectives.Meanwhile, with the analysis of this conference interpretation, the author’s thesisoffers referential material for conference interpreting studies and suggestive referenceto interpreters.
