Sutra of Buddha’s Fundamental Deeds, mainly recording Buddha’s life storywith60fascicles and the most numerous and most wide-ranging content among allsutras, was translated by J ānagupta, an ancient Indian Buddhist Master, and writtendown by Seng Tan, Fei Changfang, Liu Ping, etc. from the seventh year to the twelfthyear of Kaihuang period in Sui Dynasty (587-592AD). As a dynastic study aboutChinese language in a special book——Chinese version of Sutra of Buddha’sFundamental Deeds, this paper makes a discovery and analysis on the new disyllablesand new meanings appearing in Sutra of Buddha’s Fundamental Deeds, which are notor late included in The Great Chinese Dictionary——the most authoritative largedictionary in the contemporary era, under the principle of exhaustion through methodsof comparison, induction, and so on to explore the language value of Chinese versionsutra in Chinese language study and provide a reference for the large Chinesedictionary’s compilation and revision as well.The paper contains five parts in discovering the new disyllables and newmeanings in Sutra of Buddha’s Fundamental Deeds.Chapter One, as a preface, introduces the origin of selecting topic, the literaturereview, the procedures and the methods, and the definition of new disyllables and newmeanings.Chapter Two, using The Great Chinese Dictionary as a reference, displays thenew disyllables and new meanings appearing in Sutra of Buddha’s FundamentalDeeds yet not or late being included in The Great Chinese Dictionary throughexhaustive collection, analysis, and comparison.Chapter Three, still using The Great Chinese Dictionary as a reference, makes acomparison between Sutra Buddha’s Fundamental Deeds and The Great ChineseDictionary word by word, so as to discover the meanings which are not or lateincluded in The Great Chinese Dictionary, namely the new meanings in this chapter.Chapter Four analyzes how the new disyllables in Sutra Buddha’s Fundamental Deeds appeared and why the new meanings formed.Chapter Five, as a conclusion of exploration and analysis on new disyllables andnew meanings discovered in Sutra Buddha’s Fundamental Deeds, summarizes itscontribution to development of vocabulary in Sui Dynasty.
