On E-C Translation Of Financial News Headlines From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Financial and economic events have become interesting to the common people in the modern society on account of the close relations between their daily life and the undulating economic situations at home and abroad. The fact that people are directly or indirectly involved in conducting financial transactions or managing money matters indicates that reports of overseas financial or economic activities tend to be the daily readings of more and more Chinese people. Against this backdrop, good translation of the overseas financial news becomes significant and the effective translation of news headlines will quickly arrest the readers’eyes. Therefore, how to translate English financial news headlines well is worthy of theoretical discussion.This thesis proposes to study E-C translation of financial news headlines from the perspective of Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory. In Verschueren’s point of view, the use of language is the process of continuous making choices consciously or unconsciously at linguistic level, covering lexical, grammatical and rhetoric aspects, and at extra-linguistic level, as language choices have to be adaptable to the physical, social and mental worlds.The thesis first reviews on the studies of overseas and domestic financial news headlines, and then constructs the Adaptation Theory-based theoretical framework. Second, it illustrates the comparison and contrast of English and Chinese financial news headlines. Third, it elaborates on the detailed application of Adaptation Theory in translation process through examples extracted from authoritative newspapers and websites. In the process of translation, news headlines translators should adapt to linguistic conventions and factors in social, physical and mental worlds in order to approach the acceptable target headlines. Furthermore, four practical translation strategies, namely, literal translation, rewriting, addition and omission, are put forward for the ultimate purpose of giving guidance to E-C translation of the FNHs.
